Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 1/2 lbs ground beef 80/20
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (for sauce)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (for sauce)
  • 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar (for onions)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for onions)
  • 1 tbsp water as needed (for onions)
  • 4 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 2 ripe tomatoes diced or sliced
  • 1 cup dill pickle slices
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 1/2 white onion finely diced raw
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh chives optional for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Animal Style sauce by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, sugar, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl. Whisk until smooth and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Caramelize onions by melting butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, and salt; cook for 35-45 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Form ground beef into loosely packed balls and season with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Heat a cast iron skillet over high heat and add oil. Smash beef balls flat and cook without moving for 2-3 minutes until caramelized.
  5. Flip patties, add cheese slices on top, and cook for an additional minute until melted.
  6. Assemble bowls starting with shredded lettuce followed by diced tomatoes, raw onions, caramelized onions, cheese-covered patties, dill pickle slices, and drizzle with Animal Style sauce.
